Wayne starts conference play

Posted

Head coach Josh Trent and his basketball teams were back on the court last week hosting AmPo and then in Alex for a tournament.

“Both teams are struggling to score right now, but are on the courts competing,” Trent said.

The Lady Bulldogs came up short in their games, falling to the Lady Panthers of AmPo 48-10, the Lady Longhorns of Alex 55-38 and the Lady Warriors of Chattanooga 32-26.

Sophomore Lorensa Martinez led the team with 23 points through three games.

The Bulldogs also struggled.

They got their lone win over Union City, 53-38, in the Alex tournament.

They fell to AmPo 74-37, to Stratford 58-53 and then to Mt. View-Gotebo 47-29.

Sophomores Brannon Lewelling and Ethan Mullins were steady scorers for Wayne.

Both had 50-plus points through four games. Mullins had a 25-point outing in Wayne’s loss to Stratford. Lewelling led the Bulldogs with 18 in their loss to Mt. View-Gotebo.

Wayne was scheduled to host Wanette on Tuesday and they travel to Stratford Friday to kick off District play.

“We didn’t have a great tournament showing, but hopefully now that we are getting into conference play, we will get it going,” Trent said.
