Wayne eyes Stratford

Posted

Wayne was defeated 36-0 Friday night by Ringling.

The Blue Devils (5-0 District, 7-0 overall) were able to exploit the Bulldog secondary while Wayne’s defense slowed down their run game.

“We held our own against the run on defense,” Wayne head coach Brandon Sharp said. “They were able to throw it up and they got some touchdown passes.”

Ringling, defending Class A champions, was as advertised.

“They were outstanding,” Sharp said. “They are the defending State champions with lots of guys back. They are who they are.”

Wayne held Ringling to just over 100 yards rushing on 29 carries.

“We felt like our kids did a decent job against the run,” Sharp said.

Brannon Lewelling registered 13 tackles and Maddox Mantooth had seven tackles.

Kevin Bynum intercepted a Ringling pass in the game.

Offensively for Wayne, Ethan Mullins rushed for 69 yards on 22 carries.

“They definitely zeroed in on him,” Sharp said. “They have only given up 18 points all year. It was a personal challenge for them to shut down our run game and we couldn’t throw to loosen up their defense.”

Stratford

Wayne is set to host Stratford (1-4 in District, 2-6 overall)Friday at 7 p.m.

Last year’s meeting was cancelled mid-game due to torrential rain and lightning.

“This has been a rivalry for a long time,” Sharp said. “We always want to beat them like they want to beat us.”

Stratford will operate a power run game with power I and use wing and slot positions.

They have a talented young quarterback and two senior receivers he likes to throw to.

“Their record doesn’t show how good they are,” Sharp said. “Coach (Michael) Blackburn always does a good job with them.”
