The Washington Warrior basketball team finished an exhausting week with unblemished records.

Both teams won four games crammed into about a week’s time.

It was an intense warm up before the Playoffs begin Saturday night at home against Lexington, with the girls tipping at 6 p.m.

Girls

Washington head coach Kale Simon said his team used the scheduling to help simulate the State tournament’s schedule for three games.

“We take every situation as a challenge to be tougher,” he said. “My team responded to that challenge.

The girls defeated Comanche 79-23 in the first game of the stretch.

Breanna Lindert ruled the inside and led all scorers with 17 points in the game.

Preslee Johnson was hitting shots and joined her in double figures with 11 points.

A fast start on the offensive end of the floor left Comanche seeing stars as the Warriors got out to a 22-3 lead in the first quarter. The score was 47-10 by halftime.

Jones

Washington defeated 3A’s No. 12 team, Jones, 54-31.

Kelby Beller led the Warrior scoring charge with 10 points.

The Warriors had 11 different players score in the game.

Newcastle

Washington defeated 4A No. 6 Newcastle, 56-52, on Valentine’s Day in front of a raucous Racer crowd.

Lindert went off for 25 points in the game. Beller scored 13 and Johnson added 11 in the victory.

Washington took a slight lead into the halftime locker room but fell behind by the end of the third quarter.

They edged the Racers in the fourth to secure the win.

“The Newcastle game was awesome,” Simon said. “It was challenging and the crowd was hostile and exactly what you want to experience. It was a win that was rewarding when we overcame some adversity.”

Bridge Creek

Washington defeated Bridge Creek 63-16 to finish the stretch before they begin the Playoffs.

Shelbie Caveness led the team in scoring with 14 points, Johnson had 12 and Lindert scored 10.

The Warriors, now 23-1, turn their attention to their District tournament game Saturday against Lexington.

Simon likes where his team is at this point of the season but also expects to get more from them.

“I like where we are right now,” he said. “But we still have tons of growth in the coming weeks. We’re not stagnant and growth is still on our horizon.”

The Warriors landed in Class 3A’s Area II for the Playoffs.

Simon is looking forward to the next few weeks and his team will be focused on not letting circumstances control who they are.

Boys

The Warrior boys team rolled in their busy week and head coach Trevor Smith was proud of his team.

They defeated Comanche 71-48 at home on senior night.

Jack McKimmey led the Warriors with 12 points in the game.

Washington had 12 players score against the Indians.

“Our depth showed up over the last week,” Smith said. “We played nine or ten players a game and that’s a huge reason we won all our games.”

Jones

Washington beat Jones (3A No. 17) 50-31.

McKimmey and Mason Adams each scored nine points in the game.

“I was pleased with our defense effort in the game,” Smith said. “We held them to their season-low points.”

Newcastle

The Warriors walked out of a hostile environment with a 65-58 win against Newcastle.

Adams led the team in scoring with 13 points, followed by Teagen Foster with 11 and McKimmey with 10.

Bridge Creek

Washington utilized a strong second half to defeat the Bobcats 77-61 to close out the stretch.

“I was really happy with our seniors this week,” Smith said. “They really set the tone and everyone jumped on with them.”

Washington, now 19-5, begin the Playoffs against Lexington at the Warrior Event Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
