The Washington baseball team defeated Casady (10-5 and (15-0) to secure the District 3A-2 championship.
With the win, they will host their Regional tournament.
The likely opponents are Marietta and Alva, but the brackets had not been finalized as of our press deadline.
Officials with the schools are working to have those games played Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1.
Casady
Washington’s two Casady wins were won in a double header.
Warrior head coach Brad Lucas was extremely happy with how his team played.
“We played really, really well,” he said. “We pitched it really well and we can defend.”
The first game’s pitcher was Owen Andrews.
He struck out eight batters in five innings, while giving up three walks and a hit.
“All in all, the way the kids played on the field and communicated with each other was fun to watch,” Lucas said. “We’ll be hard to beat when we play like that.”
Offensively, Lucas was pleased with how his team put the ball into play and ran the bases.
“We stole several bases, Lucas said of the 10 steals his team took.
Liam Keltner stole four bags himself.
Washington started the scoring with a three-run first inning.
They also scored three in the second and fourth innings before hanging one more run in the fifth.
Yadi Bello was 3-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs.
In the second game, Spencer Barton got the nod to start on the mound.
He struck out six batters in six innings while giving up four hits and a walk.
Jackson Rico was 3-4 with a double. He also had three ribbies and a walk.
Bello went yard in the fourth inning and scored two runs on the swing.
Jackson Mays doubled in both games.
“We had some timely hits in the games and are hitting better in general,” Lucas said. “We can always get better but as a whole they’re doing a good job. We’re taking a better approach at the plate and having selective at-bats and looking for their pitch.”
Upcoming
The Warriors will not be idle leading up to the Regional tournament.
They traveled to Heritage Hall Tuesday and will play at Purcell tonight (Thursday).
They are set to host Blanchard Friday and travel to Newcastle Monday.
“I still don’t feel like we’ve peaked. We’re still climbing and to peak at the right time would be a really good thing for this bunch,” Lucas said. “They work hard and put in extra work and do what we ask.
“We’ve played a tough schedule,” he continued. “We’ve been tested and now it’s time for all that competition to pay off come Playoff time.”
Washington is 17-9 this season.
