Funeral services for Sonny Ward, 87, of Purcell will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2025 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
Mr. Ward passed away on April 11, 2025.
Sonny was born on January 13, 1938 in Purcell, Okla., to Gaylord and Gladys Ward.
In 1953, he caught the eye of a young lady named Carolyn Ruth when he was working for Carolyn’s dad in the broom corn patch. They quickly fell in love and were married on February 3, 1956. Together they raised two sons, Scott and Grant.
Sonny grew up and attended school in Purcell graduating with the Dragon Class of 1956. Sonny worked for General Telephone Company for over 30 years. He began as a line man, installer/repairman, and ended his career in the Engineering Department. His farming and ranching career started in the late 60’s and continued the rest of his life. Sonny enjoyed spending his free time with his racehorses and cattle.
He loved his family and friends. When not working he enjoyed spending time having morning talks in the coffee shop. He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
He was a beloved Dad and Papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gaylord and Gladys (Harper) Ward; his beloved wife, Carolyn Ward; and his sisters, Betty Cavnar and Bobbie Sue Powell.
Sonny is survived by his sons, Scott Ward and wife, Pam, of Oklahoma City and Grant Ward and wife, Lisa, of Byars; his sister, Sallie Kennedy of Norman; his sisters-in-law, Arlene Kennedy of Maysville and JoAnn Huddleston of Dibble; his grandchildren, Amanda Hogue and husband, Brad, of Norman, Richard Ward of Purcell, Michelle Barnes and husband, Brad, of Oklahoma City and Jeri Muncie and husband, Ty, of Las Vegas; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Union Hill Baptist Church, 20441 Bryant Ave., Purcell, OK 73080.
