District games tip at 6 p.m.

Purcell’s girls are on a three game winning streak heading into Friday’s District Tournament at Ada.

The Dragons will square off with the Cougars at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game, set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Toney Cooper’s Dragons have notched victories over Pauls Valley, Bridge Creek and Lindsay and are looking forward to the challenge at Ada Friday.

Three Dragons were in double figures in the 64-18 victory over Pauls Valley led by Kenna Esparza’s 14. Also in double digits were Haven Buchanan with 13 and Hannah Whitaker with 12.

In the 91-29 blowout victory over Bridge Creek, four Dragons finished in double digits led by Haven Buchanan with 20, who led all scorers. Lili Del Toro had 14, followed by Esparza with a baker’s dozen and Whitaker with 11.

Purcell topped Lindsay, 45-27 Monday in a game moved up a night due to the winter storm.

Tinley Winters and Hadleigh Harp topped the scoring with nine points apiece.

“I was pleased with our intensity for the Bridge Creek game,” Cooper said. “We came out hitting shots while keeping them below double digits for the first quarter. Scoring continued through the next quarter as we went into the half with a nice lead.”

At the break, Purcell led the Bobcats, 47-17 before out-scoring the Bobcats 43-12 in the second half.

“Our girls worked extremely hard to focus on the things we will need to be better at moving forward. When shots are falling for us, we are a hard team to beat, add some defensive intensity and they become extremely tough for any opponent,” the coach said.

Coach Matt Lohn’s Dragons topped Pauls Valley 69-43 led by Brayden Tharp’s 22 points. Seth Bunch found the bottom of the net for 16 points followed by Jaime Resendiz with a dozen.

That same trio led Purcell in their close 67-64 loss at Bridge Creek. Tharp led the way with 21 followed by Bunch with 19 and Resendiz with 12.

“I liked how our offense played to open the Bridge Creek game,” Lohn said. “The guys were confident, executing and sharing the ball well. We paired that with a strong defensive effort in the second quarter, taking full control of the game. However, a few missed rotations late where they made plays allowed them to cut our lead to five and gain momentum going into the half.”

Bridge Creek out-scored the Dragons 42-35 in the final two frames to post the victory.

“Unfortunately, a defensive change I made in the second half allowed No. 23 to get going and we really never recovered,” Lohn said.

“That’s on me and my inability to help my guys adjust. The result was another heartbreaker. I have to give credit to Bridge Creek and coach Korsjens. They went to their zone  looks in the second half, eliminating a lot of the offensive looks we are used to getting.

“We also turned the ball over too often against the zone and compounded it by having a poor rebounding half on the defensive end. Bridge Creek gained the advantage from these two things and we simply could not overcome the deficit.

“I remain proud of the fight my guys bring to every game. They leave their hearts out there every time we compete. There is not much more a coach or teammate can ask for. The Basketball Gods are watching. Our time is near,” he said.

Purcell dropped another heartbreaker at Lindsay Monday night, 56-51 in overtime.

Bunch led the scoring with 17. He was joined in double figures by Tharp with 13.

“We had every opportunity,” Lohn said.

“We had great moments and some moments we’d like to forget.

“Lindsay deserves all the credit for pressuring us into poor shots and decisions which ultimately got them back into the game,” Lohn continued.

The Leopards made a big time contested shot to send the game into the extra frame.

“I liked our resolve coming out of the break to start the extra period,” the coach said.

“We have put ourselves in good positions throughout the season only to lose grip and sit in the post game locker room wondering what happened.

“It’s a bitter pill but I believe in the experience we have gained. I believe in these kids. It’s time to reward ourselves.

“Everyone is 0-0 entering the playoffs,” Lohn said. “It’s a new season so we will pack our bags full of the good stuff we’ve learned and take it to Ada.”
