Velma Lorene McGee was born March 17, 1921 in St. Louis, Oklahoma, the second of 10 children born to Horace Houston McGee and Nellie Jane (Morris) McGee.

She learned as a young woman, the value of hard work, helping out wherever she could on the family farm. She was raised near Washington and attended Washington Schools, graduating with the Class of 1938. Lorene then attended the University of Oklahoma for a time.

On Valentine’s Day in 1942, Lorene married her best friend and life partner, a young serviceman named Elbert “Dube” Chitwood. They made their home in Goldsby where together they raised two children, son Mike and daughter Jean. Lorene worked tirelessly as a homemaker, caring and providing for her young family. She was a hard worker and instilled these values in her children.

As the kids got older, she began working for the University of Oklahoma in Administration, and eventually retired from Data Processing. Lorene was an excellent seamstress, and made everything from school clothes to wedding dresses for family and friends. She enjoyed tending to her garden and canning fruits and vegetables. Lorene was an excellent cook and will forever be remembered for her chocolate pies, homemade jellies and Thanksgiving dressing.

Lorene was a woman of great faith and a longtime and faithful member of the Church of Christ in Washington.   She stayed active in her congregation where her strong alto voice will be missed. She was a loving mother and grandmother, sister, aunt and a true friend. She will be dearly missed!
