Joseph Elbert Hyde

Joseph E. (Joe) Hyde was born to Elbert J. Hyde and Coy Mae (Andrews) Hyde on July 25, 1933 in McClain County, Okla. He departed this life on March 10, 2020 with family by his side. 

Joe was the first born of ten children. His parents farmed in several locations in McClain County. They lived a few miles west of Washington when Joe started school. Their place of residence was located in the Dibble School District. He later attended school at Cole, Freeny and Blanchard schools all located in McClain County. He completed two years of College at Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City Extension.

In 1954 he and Dorothy Fay Madden were married and of this marriage four children were born. The marriage ended in divorce on October 31, 1984.

In October, 1986 he and Helen Louise (Hackney) Hawkins were United in Marriage in Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Norman where he resided until his death.

Joe was employed as a breadman for Bill’s Bread Co. located in Chickasha, Okla. His law enforcement career began with the Norman Police Dept. on February 1, 1957. He retired with 20 years of service as Major on February 1, 1977. During his employment he served in all the ranks in the department.

Upon retirement he entered the real estate field as a manager and later owned Hyde Real Estate in Norman. He then re-entered the law enforcement field with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Dept. for one year before taking the position as Noble Police Chief. After serving six years he retired due to his health. He was employed with the American Exchange Bank of Norman.

He ended his law enforcement career with the United States Marshalls Service in Oklahoma City with over seven years of service and retired once more in August, 1995 after the Murrah Building Bombing. He then enjoyed woodworking, genealogy and traveling to 45 of the 50 states.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herbert, Willie and Don Hyde; one son, Dale Hawkins.

Those who survive him include his wife, Helen; two sons, Randy and Ricky Hyde; four daughters, Marilyn Graham (Rick), Donna Hyde, Rita Sherwin and Darla Murphy (Mike); three brothers, Floyd Hyde, Lloyd Hyde (Johannah), and Lonnie Hyde (Linda), three sisters, Betty Prince (Barry), Floy Murphy (James) and Dorothy Beller; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank Humanity Hospice especially his aide Colisa that treated him with respect and made him laugh.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at the Goldsby Baptist Church. Interment was at the Washington Cemetery.  Honors were by the Norman Police Department.
