Jim Tyler’s long and storied law enforcement career

Posted

Jim Tyler began his career in law enforcement when he was discharged from the Navy.

After some time working at an aircraft factory, he settled onto the police force in San Diego, CA for 15 years.

He spent the middle years of his career in Lindsay where he was Temporary Chief of Police for a time and in Blanchard where he was the Chief of Police.

He was also the Under Sheriff in Garvin County. He served his final 15 years in McClain County.

Tyler is a humble man. When asked to share personal successes he said, “Anything I might say about myself sounds like bragging. There was nothing spectacular about it, I just did everyday stuff.”

Throughout his storied 55 year career, Tyler served the communities he worked for very well.

“I enjoyed helping people and putting crooks in jail,” he stated simply.

“He’s only been gone a week and we were already talking about him this morning, McClain County Undersheriff James Goins said. “He was totally dependable, would do anything you ask and give you the shirt off his back.

“Jim was a pillar of the office,” Goins continued.

Despite the fact that police work has changed dramatically over the years, Tyler encourages young people considering a career in law enforcement to, “Remember you want to help people. Don’t become bitter and certainly do not lose your sense of humor!”

Tyler has been married to Ruth for 58 years. They have five children, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, too.

His plans after retirement are, “To do as little as I can get away with!”

Joking aside, Tyler loves fishing and plans to spend time on Lake Texoma and Lake Eufaula. He and Ruth hope to spend some time traveling together as well.
