Guard depth, up tempo style will define season for Dragons

Coming off a 17-11 campaign last year, Purcell will rely on its depth at the guard positions as the 2019-2020 season unfolds.

Gone from last year’s squad are Reece Milner, Garrett Galyean and Jake Berrey.

Returning starters include Gavin Nation, Mojo Browning, Nate Willis and Grant Smith.

“Senior Gavin Nation, junior Mojo Browning and sophomores Nate Willis and Jorge Sotelo will be our players to watch,” head coach Roger Raper said. “They each bring varsity experience and have the ability to score the ball.”

Raper confirms the strength of this year’s club will be the depth at guard.

“We have very quick guards who all can handle the ball and have the ability to get to the rim as well as the ability to knock down perimeter shots.

“Our success will be determined by how we are able to speed up our opponents with aggressive defense and our effectiveness at scoring the ball in transition,” Raper continued. “We must also be very determined on the defensive boards as a team. We will not have anyone above 6’ tall so team rebounding will be a huge key.”

Raper, who enters his third season as the Dragon skipper, is 31-22 in two seasons with the Dragons and is 176-173 overall as a head coach.

“We are very excited about this season and look forward to its challenges,” Raper said. “We should be a very fun team to come watch play as the pace of the game will be very up tempo. I was very pleased with the growth and efforts in which we played with over the summer and hope that it will carry over into the new season.”

The Dragons opened the season hosting the Washington Warriors last Tuesday night.
