It took Sarah Jones’ Dragons a few innings to iron out the bugs and first game jitters but by the fifth frame things started coming together.

That’s when they scored seven runs leading to a season and home opening 9-8 victory over visiting Cache Monday afternoon.

Senior Ella Resendiz smashed home runs in her first two at bats and was intentionally walked the remainder of the contest.

“It was our very first day as a complete team,” Jones said. “This semester, we’ve managed to hit the field about five times.

“We were uncertain about how everything would unfold, but I reassured them that it would take some time to find our rhythm and reminded them to have fun,” the veteran coach confirmed.

“We experienced a lot of jitters. Even the seniors felt a bit anxious. In the early moments of the game, we made some silly defensive errors and struggled to connect our hits.”

“By the fifth inning, we began to click, capitalizing on their mistakes to score seven runs and take the lead,” Jones said.

Resendiz, Mack McKay, Miaca Martinez and Ava Sparks all had two hits in the contest. KK Vazquez, Kendra Anderson and Jasey Baker added to our tally as well.

“Mack did an excellent job pitching during the first game, and Hannah was able to shake off the basketball rust to pitch in the JV game,” the coach said.

The Dragons are off until March 24 due to Spring Break. They will host Washington that first day back. The junior high Dragons will be in the Lexington Festival Thursday.
