Dragons off to fast start

Wayne drew first blood in their half of the first inning but the lead was short-lived.

Purcell took the lead for good in the bottom of the first and never looked back eventually posting an 11-1 run-rule victory to open the 2021 season.

Creed Smith notched the win on the mound allowing only one hit while striking out 11 Bulldogs.

Hayden Harp was a hitting machine going 3-3 including two doubles with two RBIs and scored a run.

Smith helped his own cause smacking a pair of hits in three trips to the plate and scored a run.

Cade Smith spanked a solo home run. He was joined in the RBI category by Titus Mason, Nate Willis, Zack Idlett and Harp. Idlett and Harp both had two RBIs in the contest.

Willis also had a double. Idlett and Mason’s hits were both triples.

Purcell pounded out 10 hits, got good pitching from Smith and did not commit an error.

“I thought Creed threw pretty well for his first varsity game,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “He started out slow but found his rhythm and settled down during the game. Hitting-wise we all were trying to get the timing down and finally settled in after the second inning and got the bats going,” the coach said.

Purcell’s sticks didn’t cool off much in a 16-2 run-rule victory over Lexington.

The offensive onslaught came via doubles by Dayton Smith, Cade Smith, Creed Smith, Titus Mason and Jorge Munoz all had doubles in the game.

Cade Smith popped a two-run home run and finished with a team-high three RBIs.

Dayton Smith and Munoz both went 3-2 and had two RBIs each.

Brodrick Smith did the work on the bump limiting Lexington two hits in three innings of work while striking out six Bulldogs.

“I thought Brodrick pitched really well and was consistently around the plate all game,” Sharp said. “On offense everyone did a good job of timing up the pitchers and saw the ball well.”

The Dragons collected nine hits in all.

After jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the first, Purcell turned on the jets pushing across 10 runs in the second frame to but the game wide open.

For the second straight game the Dragons did not commit an error on defense.

The win streak was snapped Monday when Mount St. Mary pinned a 13-1 loss on the Dragons at Purcell.

The same two teams were scheduled to meet again Tuesday at the Rockets home field.
