Dragons host Regional tourney

Purcell ran their season record to 23-3 with victories last week over Westmoore and Lone Grove and this week over AmPo.

Purcell was cruising leading Westmoore comfortably, 6-love, heading into the top of the seventh.

But the Lady Jaguars pushed across five runs before the Dragons could put them out and secure the one-run victory.

Katelynn Carwile, who pitched all seven innings, was 2-4 in the game at the plate. Both hits were doubles. She had one RBI.

Brook Fleming was 2-3 while Hannah Buchanan went 2-4 with an RBI.

Coach Sarah Jones also got hits from Chelsea Spain, Sandra Del Toro and Addie Stanton. All three had an RBI in the contest.

Purcell pushed across two runs in the first inning and added three more in the third. They got what turned out to be the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the fifth.

“That was a good win against the defending 6A state champs. We hit the ball well and so did they,” Jones said.

“We had them down 6-0 going into the bottom of the 7th and with two outs they strung hits together to make it a close ball game 6-5.

“It was a good win,” she continued. “They scared us a little at the end but we finished it and came out with the win. The intensity was high and it is always fun to beat a much larger school.”

Fleming got the victory in the circle against Lone Grove giving up just three hits while the Dragons were posting a 4-0 shutout win.

Purcell had 11 hits in the game but also made three errors.

Carwile swatted a three run double while Khia Tyler was a perfect 3-3 at the plate.

Buchanan went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Spain and Kyleigh Smedley both had hits in the win.

“Lone Grove is a 4A school and we could possibly see them later this season,” Jones said. “Fleming did a fantastic job in the circle, she had four k’s.

“It was a good game to learn from going into playoffs and we also got a good idea of what they can do if we see them later on,” the coach said.

Purcell hosted AmPo Monday in their final tune-up before Regionals.

The game was a pitchers’ dual with each team managing only three hits.

Purcell won 1-0. The Dragons pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the fifth.

Fleming and Carwile combined to nail down the victory for the Dragons.

Carwile, Fleming and Spain accounted for Purcell’s three hits.

It was Carwile’s double that scored Missy Nimsey, who had walked with two outs.

“AmPo is a good squad that is on their way to the state tournament this week and defending A state champion. We thank them for coming up and playing us.

“It was a good game and both teams battled it out,” Jones said. “The defense was great and what is funny is that we both had three hits and each left five runners on base.”

The Dragons are eyeing the Regional Tournament they are to host Wednesday and Thursday.

Purcell opens the tournament against McLoud at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The winner of that game was to play the winner of Weatherford and Chickasha.

Only the winner of the tournament will advance to State.

Game times today (Thursday) have been moved up due to predictions of weather coming in.

The first game will start at 10 a.m. instead of 2:30 p.m., Jones reported.
