Purcell run-ruled Little Axe and Vanoss before falling in the finals against CCS in the annual Heart of Oklahoma baseball tournament.
The Dragons shutout Little Axe in a 10-0 verdict on Thursday to open the three-day affair.
Bryson Perkins led the offense going 2-2 at the plate along with two RBIs.
Casey Billingsley, Deaken Dobbins and Boston Knowles all had hits in the contest.
Boston Knowles got the start on the mound and the win.
Boston tossed four innings of no hit ball striking out six.
“Boston did a good job in throwing strikes and controlled the zone all day,” head coach Cole Sharp said.
Both Boston and Dobbins recorded doubles in the game.
Purcell backed that shutout with another downing Vanoss 10-0 riding the arm of Brody Walkup who threw 31 strikes out of 39 pitches, striking out one.
Kash Knowles, Walkup and Bryson Perkins all went 2-2 in the victory with Knowles credited with two RBIs.
Knowles, Parker Page and Casey Billingsley all had doubles in the game.
Purcell’s bats were as hot against Vanoss as they were cold in the loss to CCS.
The Dragons pounded out a dozen hits in the Vanoss victory but were limited to five against the Royals.
Boston Knowles went 2-3 at the plate against Vanoss.
However, the hit parade ran out of gas in the finals with CCS pinning a 3-2 defeat on the Dragons.
Deaken Dobbins took the mound as the starter before being relieved by Kash Knowles, who was the losing pitcher in the game.
Purcell’s two runs came in the bottom of the fifth. The Dragons took a 2-1 lead into seventh when the Royals pushed across a pair of runs on a home run by Elijah Williams.
The Dragons were unable to muster anything in the bottom half of the frame.
Earlier in the week the Dragons fell to the Heritage Hall Chargers 4-2.
The Dragons were limited to three hits, one each by Cash Cook, Billingsley and Dobbins.
“We hit the ball really well against Vanoss,” Sharp said. “We had good situational hitting and picked it up in the third and fourth innings where we started to hit the ball really well. We scored nine runs in the fourth and ended the game in a run rule.”
“I was pleased with the effort we gave and playing good baseball as a team. Hitting, pitching, and defense was good,” he said.
Against CCS, our bats were pretty quiet all game. We didn’t do a good job in situational hitting. Playing a team like CCS you have to come up with some timely hitting. The highlight was Kash Knowles hitting a two RBI hit in the fifth putting us up 2-0.
“We need to improve on closing out games when we have a lead and finish the game. I was proud of our guys in the way we battled and stayed focused the whole tournament,” Sharp concluded.
Purcell was scheduled to play Pauls Valley both Monday and Tuesday and host Bridge Creek in a makeup game at home on Friday.
Purcell was 13-11 heading into the Pauls Valley games.
