Dragons fashion 6-1 mark

Posted

Behind the double digit scoring of Mojo Browning and Gavin Nation, Purcell’s Dragons moved to 6-1 knocking off Pauls Valley in the final pre-holiday portion of the schedule last Thursday, 57-48.

Browning led all scorers with 18 points while Nation had a baker’s dozen.

Once again the Dragons came out of the shoot on fire throwing down 21 first quarter points leading to a 36-28 halftime advantage.

“It was a tough win,” head coach Roger Raper said. “They are good.”

Coach David Sikes’ Dragons took a three point lead into the fourth period only to come up on the short end of a 46-40 stick.

They are 5-2 heading into the Christmas break.

Kora Keith’s 15 points led the Dragons with Alicia Baker joining her in double figures with a dozen.

Purcell, who has been a good fourth quarter scoring team, was limited to six against the Lady Panthers.

“We battled early but our turnovers killed us,” Sikes said. “Our spacing was really bad on offense in the second half. We let their pressure fluster us.”

Purcell was a paltry 6-16 at the line while Pauls Valley was making 14 of 18 attempts.

“We have had a good start to the first half of the season,” Sikes continued. “My girls have shown so much improvement but we have a lot to improve on over Christmas break.”

Both the girls and boys pocketed road wins at Lindsay earlier last week.

Baker had 18 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to lead the offense against the Leopardettes with Keith right on her heels with 17 points. Purcell won the contest 61-15 but it really wasn’t that close Sikes said.

Lindsay got several baskets at the end on Purcell reserves.

“We started off a little slow but found our tempo in the third quarter,” Sikes said.

“I was proud of my girls for their rebounding effort,” he continued.

The Dragons out-rebounded the Leopardettes 43-31.

Raper’s Dragons roared back from a four point deficit in the final stanza to post a 54-53 victory.

Browning’s 27 points led all scorers. Nate Willis was also in double figures pouring in 16 points.

“It was a very tough ball game,” Raper said. “Lindsay played well and competed the whole game.

“We were fortunate enough to make a few more plays down the stretch to get the win.”

Purcell is off until January 7 when they host Bridge Creek.
