Carwile chosen as Michele Smith award winner

Purcell senior Katelynn Carwile was awarded with the Michele Smith award last Tuesday night during halftime of the Purcell-Washington basketball game.

The award is given to five high school softball players across the state each year.

Smith attended Oklahoma State University and is a double Olympic Softball Gold Medalist with the U.S. National Team, having played in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics.

In 2006, Smith was inducted into the ASA Softball Hall of Fame.

She has also played professionally in the Japanese Professional Softball League since 1992. She is a 7-time Japanese Pro League Champion & MVP.

Carwile has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Oklahoma State University next year.

She was selected to the Middle West All-State Team earlier this year.

This season Carwile had a  batting average of .540 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs.

She pitched 111 innings with an ERA of 1.85.

She struck out 172 batters while issuing only 23 walks and she had a 1.000 fielding percentage.

For her career she had just under 600 strikeouts and a batting average of .515.
