The Wayne Bulldogs picked up wins over Alex (10-2) and Lexington (4-2) on their way to the championship game of the I-35 Classic tournament.
They faced Purcell and dropped that game 15-0.
The Bulldog bats were ice cold when they got into the championship game. The Wayne batters had no hits and six strikeouts in their lopsided loss to the Dragons.
On the other hand, Purcell collected 10 hits and scored 15 runs to get the tournament win.
Three Bulldogs tried their hand on the mound. Jaxon Dill pitched one inning. He allowed three runs on two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Duke Moore came on in relief for two innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Finally, Layne Canfield relieved Moore and he took the loss on the mound. Purcell added seven more runs in the top of the fourth and that’s all she wrote.
Wayne started the tournament with a 10-2 win over Alex. They had eight hits, including two each from Ty Kemp and Moore. Langstyn McClendon, Dill, Canfield and Brody Kemp each had one hit.
The Bulldogs score one run in the bottom of the first when Dill singled in his atbat.
Alex tied it up in the top of the second on a Wayne error.
But, Wayne broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the second. Ben Fisher walked to score one, a passed ball scored another and an Alex error scored two.
Wayne added one more in the third, three in the fourth and one final run in the fifth.
Dill was on the mound for the win. He pitched five innings allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out six batters.
In their second game of the tournament, Wayne beat fellow Bulldogs of Lexington 4-2.
Outhitting the ‘Dawgs 10-3, Wayne got on the board first when Dill doubled and Ty Kemp singled each scoring one run.
Lexington answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Then Wayne got their winning runs in the third when two singles scored one run apiece.
Dill and Sloan Jackson had two hits apiece. Fisher, McClendon, Kemp, Canfield, Lewis and Brody Kemp each had one hit.
Dill was on the mound for the win. He pitched five innings and struck out six batters. He allowed two runs on three hits.
Last Tuesday, Wayne collected 17 hits on the way to an 18-1 win over Maysville.
Ty Kemp had four hits and six ribbies. Jackson had three hits and two RBIs, including an inside the park homerun.
The Bulldogs are 6-4 and will be on the road all next week. On Monday they will be in Little Axe, Tuesday in Stonewall and starting Thursday in Mill Creek for a tournament.
