Mrs.  Phelps passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021.

Betty Sue Wells was born July 13, 1934 in Hot Springs, Ark., the third of 11 children born to Wesley Walton Wells and Edith Elizabeth (Walker) Wells. She was raised in El Paso, and started school there.

A senior at Austin High School, she met a young and persistent serviceman named Solan Junior Phelps. On September 24, 1952, he finally won her heart and they married in Las Cruces, N.M. Together they raised four children, Debbie, David, Robert and James.

Betty found her joy in being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Betty loved to bowl, crochet and do ceramics. She also favored the occasional casino outing with husband Solan. By 2000, she and her husband moved back to Solan’s home state of Oklahoma, residing in Oklahoma City.

Betty loved and cherished her fur baby, “Sugar.” She will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Solan Phelps; parents, Wesley and Edith Wells and siblings, Doodles Hughes, Sonny Wells and Cliff Wells.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Debbie Hullander of Oklahoma City; sons, David Phelps and wife, Ruth, of Sapulpa, Robert Phelps and wife, Pam, of Oklahoma City and James Phelps and wife, Theresa, of Oklahoma City; sisters, Linda Wells Leatherman Elliot of Weatherford, Texas, Mary Tanner of Monrovia, Calif., Wesley Anglin of Sapulpa, Rilla Barnes and husband, Jack, of El Paso and Leila Wallace of Lubbock, Texas; brothers, Fred Wells and wife, Shirley, of El Paso and Kenny Wells of Houston; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
