Battle for the Bridge Friday night

Posted

The Lady ‘Dawgs won one and lost one last week. The Lady ‘Dawgs are still ranked No. 15 by the OSSAA with a still-stellar 14-3 record.

“This past week, we haven’t been shooting the ball as well as we had been,” Lexington girls’ basketball head coach Derek Clark said.

“That made a difference in the outcomes. We’re defending a lot better. But, then it’s like, offensively we didn’t make the shots that we’ve become accustomed to making. We just need to improve our shooting.”

Lexington beat the Lindsay Lady Leopards (4-13) on the road, 48-33, last Tuesday.

The Lady ‘Dawgs never trailed in the game.

Rylee Beason had her best game, scoring 17 points. Her big sister, Lauren, was next on the scoresheet with nine, followed by Amanda Graddy and Anna Sample, both with seven points.

The Lady ‘Dawgs then hosted Washington (9-10) and the Lady Warriors got revenge.

Washington beat Lex, 54-45, last Friday to avenge a Dec. 6, 41-36, loss to Lex this season.

Lexington was on top 32-24 at halftime. But, a poor third quarter spelled doom for the Lady ‘Dawgs.

“We went seven minutes in the third quarter against Washington without scoring,” Clark said. “I don’t think our team has ever gone that long without scoring a single point. When we came out at the half, it was 32-24 in our favor. We just went cold in the third. We weren’t making anything.”

Lexington was led by Lauren Beason’s 18 points. Sample had nine while Graddy chipped in seven.

Next on the schedule for Lexington were the Marlow Lady Outlaws on Tuesday at home. On Friday night, the Lady ‘Dawgs will play at Purcell.

Lexington beat Marlow handily, 61-38, on Jan. 7. The Lady Outlaws (ranked No. 16 in Class 3A by the OSSAA) are 12-6 under head coach Terri Reimer.

Lexington lost to Purcell 49-45 at home. Purcell is 11-7 and will be a tough squad to conquer.

“I think the girls are excited,” Clark said. “Purcell came into our place and beat us. So, I think our girls will be ready to go over to Purcell and return the favor, so to speak. It will be a fun game, for sure.”

Boys

The Lexington boys are currently enjoying a two-game winning streak after beating Lindsay, 55-50, in overtime last Tuesday night and Washington, 50-42, last Friday.

“It’s always good to win,” said Lexington head coach J.D. Beck said. “We’re starting to figure some things out. We’ve been playing pretty well.”

The ‘Dawgs (5-12) and the Leopards (8-7) were tied at 43-43 at the end of regulation. Lexington, however, used strong bench play in overtime and came out on top.

“We had three players foul out in regulation. So, we had some people come off the bench to finish off that game,” Beck said.

“We as a coaching staff are very excited that the bench came out and stepped up. Coby Bear, Emanuel Ocampo, Zack Johnson, and Kolbe King were instrumental in the game. All four stepped up and helped us when we needed them the most.”

Teagin Pruitt, Heath Winterton and Josiah Dawley all fouled out in regulation. But, Bear had six points off the bench. Johnson had four points. King had two while Ocampo had one to bolster the win.

Pruitt led Lexington with 14 points before fouling out. Jaylen Cottrell had 11 points while Colton Penner had eight points down low in the paint.

The victory against Lindsay avenged two earlier losses to the Leopards – 43-41 on Dec. 10 and 45-38 on Jan. 11 at the Lindsay Tournament.

Against Washington, the ‘Dawgs were up 27-19 at halftime. They never trailed in the contest against the Warriors, who dropped to 8-11 on the season.

“The one who put us over the edge against Washington was Colton Penner,” Beck said. “He had a double-double against them.”

Penner had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the ‘Dawgs. Cottrell had 11 points from outside while Pruitt added nine points to the Lexington attack.

Lexington hosted Marlow (10-8) on Tuesday night and will play at Purcell on Friday. Marlow beat the ‘Dawgs, 41-35, on Jan. 7 at their gym. Purcell (ranked No. 15 by the OSSAA with a 14-4 record) beat the ‘Dawgs, 53-44, in the pound at Lexington.

“We feel confident that we can beat Marlow,” Beck said. “They’re coming to our place so that’s a plus. We can get them back. And, of course, we’re always excited about playing at Purcell.”
