5-0 start for Dragons

Hot hitting and good pitching the right combination

Purcell backed up their season opening victory over Davis with four wins last week including going 3-0 in district play.

The Dragons thumped Meeker17-1 and 22-0, out-hitting the Lady Bulldogs 39-3.

“After Davis, Crooked Oak got rescheduled for September 20 because of no coach and limited players,” Purcell Head Coach Sarah Jones said. “We traveled to Meeker and came out with two really big District wins.”

The coach said she is “super proud” of her pitchers.

“They all bring different looks and it gives us an advantage,” Jones said of her staff that includes Kailynn Helton, Coty Sessions and Hannah Whitaker. “I’m hoping we get to pitch in more of a rotation this week with how many games we have scheduled.”

The Dragons got the week started Monday posting a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over Lexington, led by Savannah Edwards who went 3-3 with an RBI and Ella Resendiz who had a double and a home run in two at bats.

Payci Constant was 2-2 while Lauren Holmes had a two RBI double. Haileigh Smith and Sessions both had hits in the contest.

Cora Vazquez led the Lady Bulldogs with a 3-3 outing at the plate including a double and had an RBI. Abby Turnpaugh clubbed a triple that plated a pair of runners.

Tinley Winters, Brynley Jennings and Haileigh Smith all swatted doubles in the first victory over Meeker. Ella Resendiz, who has been on fire so far this year, Kailynn Helton and Jennings all had triples. Resendiz also went yard in the game.

Jennings was 3-3 while Smith, Winters, Kenna Esparza and Constant all had two hits in the game.

Helton limited Meeker to one hit in that game and tossed a no-hitter in the second game.

In the nightcap, Resendiz led the team with five RBIs in a 2-3 performance at the plate. Jennings was 3-3 with three RBIs while Smith, Winters, Esparza and Constant all had doubles.

The only unlucky thing for the Dragons in their 12-0 run-rule victory over Bethel on Friday the 13th was a brief lightning delay.

Savannah Edwards and Resendiz were both 2-3. Sessions was 2-2 and Jones got hits from KK Eck, Jennings and Sessions. Lauren Holmes and Hadleigh Harp both doubled in the game.

“We knew this upcoming week was going to be tough and starting off with the Battle of the Bridge,” Jones said. “It’s always a good game.

“We started off strong. But after a lightning delay Lexington came out hitting the ball and jumped on us 4-3 in the top of the third,” Jones said.

Just before the delay Lexington had the bases juiced with only one out and they came through.

“One thing that I love so much about this group is that they are there to fight and everyone is a part of it,” Jones said as they came back to win the game.

“We get back in the dugout in the bottom of the fourth and they have checked back in. Coty Sessions starts us off with a single, Payci Constant singles and then Savanna Edwards hits it to right to tie the game and gets Constant to third. KK Eck hits a fly ball to left and Constant tags to give us the lead. A Resendiz walk leads to a Holmes double to put us up 7-4. We hold them in the top of the fifth. As we are hitting, lightning gets too close and administration and umps have to call it. It’s a complete game due to five innings,”Jones said.

“This week we will face some adversity, which is good, it is what we need. All I ask is that we keep responding, putting up a fight, and learning. I believe we will do that,” the coach said.

Purcell went to Chandler Tuesday, then the Murray County Bash. The schedule includes: Thursday 1:30 Sulphur, 4:30 Washington. Friday 6 Pauls Valley and  7:30 Norman High. Saturday’s schedule will be announced later.

Jones had a plug for her junior high Dragons.

“It has been nice to be able to watch the junior high group for a couple games this season,” Jones said. “They are getting better every game and really starting to show how versatile they can be, like the high school. Great job to Coach Clay and Coach Sikes and good luck to them this week in the Ada Tournament.
